More Classic
Strongman Gyms

No doubt about it -- when you take a look at those Old Time Strongman Gyms, you can help but get fired up about training. They all looked like placed where things got done, no muscle goons here, just serious training for serious people.

Some of the different things you'll notice about these Old Time Gyms that you won't see as much these days:

  • The equipment is always neatly organized and ready to be used -- and it's always high quality stuff, globe dumbbells, barbells and kettlebells were the norm

  • Lots of open space -- which was necessary to perform many of the classic lifts like the bent-press, one arm snatch, one arm clean and jerk, two hands anyhow, etc

  • No benches for bench pressing, all pressing was done while standing on the feet

  • Machines? -- not so fast, you may not see them here but many Old Time Gyms did have early forms of exercise machines (notice the rowing machine at Desbonnet's place)
